way away

from want no water by Ben Hunsberger

/

about

I imagine that there are times when soldiers are faced with the prospect that they may not make it home again. Maybe they're pinned down, maybe they're wounded. This song explores a soldier's emotions when the immediate future looks bleak, but not beyond hope. The counter theme "we are walking home" was a late addition that I think makes the song work. The voice of hope in dark times.

Make camp in the foothills
No fires tonight
Our enemy is upon us
He's looking for a fight, for a fight

Ration your provisions
Guard your water with your life
These are desparate decisions
Write a letter to your children and your wife

(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away
(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away

How the hell did we get here?
Things were going so well.
Had a good business back in Bangor
That whole world's gone to hell, gone to hell

It was different when we started
We had a stronger hand to play
All the aces, all the trump cards
Hard to figure how they traded that away...

(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away
(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away

I've got her picture in my pocket
But I can't look at her tonight
If there's a chance we get out of here
I've got to hold on through the dawn's early light

(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away
(We are walking home) Way away
(We are walking home) Way away away

layer fresh melodies with full-bodied undertones.
fold in a little nature and politics.
season with angst, humor, and a pinch of sarcasm.
serve with plenty of volume.
