Well I’m standing on Katahdin,
looking out across my life
As it cuts across this wilderness
like the edge of a knife.
I’m a long way from the place
where I started up this trail
But the journey’s been a good one,
whether I succeed or fail.

The sun comes up every morning,
Even if the clouds conceal.
Or the mountain’s silent majesty,
Refuses to reveal.
So I stumble through the dimness,
Pick my way among the stones.
And heed the voice within this place,
Its ever-present tone.

In the full light of midday,
All is well, all is clear.
And those clouds on the horizon
Never seem to come too near.
So I glance over my shoulder
And mark the distance that I’ve come.
Continue on this pebbled path
Steady beating of the drum.

After noon the weather changes
And brings the question of a storm
The chill of life’s uncertainty
And the need to be reborn.
As the sun appears and disappears
I trip on roots that cross my path
And wonder, did I miss a turn?
Am I equal to the task?

Sun sets every evening
Doesn’t matter where you are.
If you’ve made it to the summit
Or only viewed it from afar.
Every step along this trail
Is a decision to move on.
And though you step in quiet solitude
You’re never all alone.
Never really on your own.

layer fresh melodies with full-bodied undertones.
fold in a little nature and politics.
season with angst, humor, and a pinch of sarcasm.
serve with plenty of volume.
